Chapter 1 - The Sustainability Games Played by The Only Two Generations

The
Curious Mindset Exercise of Entrepreneurial Revolution
A
What would be the concerns of a most caring 40 year old (or learner-teacher of any age) in 1945 depending on hemisphere of
observation?
B What would be the concerns of a most caring
40 year old (or learner-teacher of any age) in 1985 depending on hemisphere of observation?
C What would be the concerns of a most caring 40 year old (or learner-teacher of any age) in 2025
depending on hemisphere?
This was the seminal exercise of my father Norman Macrae who founded the curriculum of Entrepreneurial
Revolution in The Economist in 1972. What he would have bet anyone's bank on by 1972 was that the 2 generations between 1945-2025
would turn out to be the systems players of humanity's sustainability games - to be or not to be 8 billion times over!

By 1972 it was clear to Norman that our species
was unstoppably committed to spending almost 4000 times more on mediating the human connections of communications and computing
in 2025 than 1945. When peoples spend 4000 times more money or time on something, sustainability depends on reducing
the costs of other value multiplying pursuits.
Norman was actually aged 22 in 1945. He had spent his last days as a teenager
navigating RAF airplanes in world war 2 over modern-day Bangladesh and Myanmar. He had just come up to Cambridge to be among
the last class to hear of Keynes 2 primary jobs for economists as system designers of the future - end poverty and ensure
capital never abuses developing the wonders of next generation's livelihoods.
In the paper-based days of 1948 to
1984, nobody saw more diversity of information on leadership decisions pass across his desk than Norman. And nobody cheered
on how the nearly half of peoples who lived in the East grew and grew from having little either happy or free to spend their
lives on in 1945 to being the millennial generation's main games players of human sustainability.
This open intelligence compass
rose with the odd privilege of turning a 3rd ranked weekly british newspaper into the world most curious viewspaper, and of
other happenstances such as marrying the daughter of the Scot (Sir) Kenneth Kemp whose job as a chief justice in Mumbai over
25 years of mediating with Gandhi began by imprisoning him and concluding by writing up the legalese for India's Independence
So
Norman was aged 62 when he wrote Entrepreneurial Revolutions two most curious jurneys into human sustainability for mass review
in 1985:
the 2025 report - ER timelines on sustainability's
exponentially compounding opportunities and risks to 2025
the
human health report -clarifying why a profession lie health would need to be 10 times less costly for worldwide access and
community service at the most basic levels determining livelihood expectancy if spending 4000 times more on mediating
global village connectivity through mobilising communications and computing was to multiply natural goodwill al around our
planet (the exact opposite economic paradigm to the Orwellian Big Brother endgame)
THE PURPOSE OF GLOBAL VALUATION
OF HEALTH
Enter stage left the 23 year old in 1984 who has
since done the most to shake up global health as a value multiplying profession. By his own accounts, Paul Farmer experienced
a muddled childhood - before entering his teens his family was moved by his father from a steady middle class lifestyle in
Massachussets to living on a non-functioning steamboat in an out of the way harbour in Florida. He too a scholarship in anthropology
at Due University in North Carolina only to find himself spending his first year of graduation asking himself what use he
could be to the poorest fol in the western hemisphere- located in rural Haiti. A servant of health was his answer. So from
1984 to 1988 he commuted between Hiati and Harvard reading a medical degree. The practice cases he brought with him from Haiti
was so extraordinarily real that his professors were soon learning more from him than vice versa. By 1988 Paul was forming
Partners in Health with his girlfriend in Haiti the young English lady Ophelia Dahl and the north korean refugee in america
and co-harvard classmate Jim Kim.
Over the next quarter of a century Paul webbed such extraordinary networks as:
the most exciting students exchanges boston medical students had ever connected with the poorest
developing world
Eventually the establishment of a world class
teaching hspital in Mirebalais Haiti, and the intent ot develop a parallel benchmark out of Rwanda, for Africa
If
you read the celebration of life in Mountains beyond Mountains you will see that the journeys of the dynamic duo Farmer
and im between 1988 and 2008 linkin many of health's most critical hotspots in Americas Centre and South and Cuba, in Russia
thanks to sponsorship by George Soros and parts of Africa.
Paul is the most caring of cmmunity service doctors by every known account.
But he plays a special powers card wherever he meets experts let alone hospital MBA. He is recognised as most knowledegable
on ID - Infectious Diseases. So from bottom to top hospitals such as Boston's Brigham Womens immediately bow tp his commands
whenever he starts a sentence ID says:
Out of the localities PIH serves most, ID has had a lot to say about
globally minimising HIV/aids, preventing outbreaks by developing essential last-mile cures to multidrug resistant tuberculosis,
and most recently fighting Ebola.
If enough young professionals and mobile apps of health care became alumni of Paul Framer, global
health could indeed be networked 10 times more affordably at the most critical focal points of sustaining healthy livelihoods
for all of us on natures borderless planet
Paul talks about anthropology's most economic development model that
both business and social leaders can enjoy in a professional arena lie health. Its called POP - Preferential Option Poor.
Its 3 main pattern rules:
- go
live with the poor to understand how to adapt your profession's service of them
- at same time analyse what system traps are locking in poverty and call in other professions
to come and live and resolve these
- always preferentially
apply new technology to the poor
Culturally POP has its roots in late 1960s catholic americas. The 1960s
was the first massive time that the peoples of south and central america asked themselves what does the roman catholic faith
mean to us in our southern hemisphere of the planet. Their vote turned out to be for the hopeful Franciscan way. This makes
every trip Pope Francis pays to the America's extraordinarily moving.
Could it just be today that if a 22 year old Chinese lady rehearses the
ER exercise with her happiest peer networks - she may web together such billion-peoples joys as the Franciscan and Confucian
ways together with open space technology's reframing of sustainability as 2016-2025 must-needs be youths most exciting and
productive decade.
